U.S. Rep. Martha Roby traveled to Afghanistan for the third time in three years over the weekend as part of a four-day visit to the region with other congresswomen to evaluate and promote the interests of Afghan women.

“I believe the treatment of Afghan women is an important bellwether as to whether we are winning the war in Afghanistan,” Rep. Roby said in a statement released by her Washington office.

Roby, currently returning to the U.S., was joined a bi-partisan delegation of fellow congresswomen to observe U.S. military operations and evaluate the current status of Afghan women, according to a release from her office.

"We are committed to supporting the gains made by Afghan women across this country,” Roby said. “We are deeply interested in their success and appreciated the opportunity to hear from them directly about their hopes and concerns for the future."

Roby, chairwoman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, recently convened a hearing on the future safety of Afghan women following the withdrawal of U.S. troops, according to the release.
