U.S. Rep. Martha Roby on Tuesday introduced a resolution marking Alabama’s 200 years of statehood. The resolution, which was introduced on behalf of all members of the state’s congressional delegation, called attention to the bicentennial milestone that Alabama will celebrate next month.

Speaking from the floor of the House of Representatives, Roby said she was honored to serve alongside her Alabama colleagues during a special time in the state’s history.

“This is a monumental occasion in our state’s history, and we are looking forward to joining Alabamians in a year full of memorable celebration and commemoration of the bicentennial,” Roby said. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve the people of Alabama as we celebrate the birthday and history of the beloved state we all call home.”

Alabama was admitted into the union on December 14, 1819. The state has been engaged in a year-long celebration commemorating the anniversary, which will culminate in a massive “birthday party” in downtown Montgomery on December 13, 14 and 15.  Information on the state’s bicentennial celebration can be found online at Alabama200.org.

H. Res. 711 is cosponsored by Representatives Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville , Mike Rogers, R-Saks, Mo Brooks, R-Huntsville, Terri Sewell, D-Selma, Bradley Byrne, R-Mobile, and Gary Palmer, R-Birmingham.
