One of my top priorities in Congress is reining in so-called “backdoor legislating,” which happens when federal agencies issue sweeping rules and regulations beyond their appropriate authority. To be sure, federal regulations are nothing new. Over the years Congress has seen fit to delegate rulemaking responsibilities to various agencies to deal with specific issues and allow for a more responsive government. However, I believe some agencies have taken this authority too far, growing into what many call the “fourth branch” of government.

Fielding state-of-the-art F-35 aircraft would no doubt be a feather in the cap for the 187th Fighter Wing, the Montgomery area and our state as a whole. As the Air Force moves through its evaluation and selection process, I will continue to advocate for the 187th, and I appreciate the support and partnership of my fellow Alabama Congressional Delegation colleagues in this effort.

This past week I had the privilege of cutting the ribbon on one of Alabama’s new First Class Pre-K locations at the Montgomery YMCA Goodtimes Center. It was exciting to join local and state officials, teachers, education advocates, and, of course, students to celebrate more children gaining access to Alabama’s high-quality pre-kindergarten program.

The new school year also serves as a reminder of the amazing work teachers, administrators and school support workers do to help educate our children. Too often their efforts and sacrifices go under-appreciated. So, as this school year begins, I want to say a special “thank you” to all the educators who work so hard to make sure students have the instruction they need for building knowledge and skills for the future.

It’s called “A Better Way,” and it is our blueprint for using responsible, conservative policy ideas to restore a confident America.

The Zika threat is real and it is here. Critical legislation is one step (and about four Senate votes) away from the president’s desk. A public health crisis of this magnitude is no time to block emergency funding in the name of politics.

The United States government was formed around the fundamental principle of balanced powers divided among separate co-equal branches. The Constitution spells out the various authorities and responsibilities of the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches, arranging a system of “checks and balances” to ensure no one branch becomes too powerful. This system is intended to “secure the blessings of liberty” and ensure that our republic truly operates by the consent of the governed.

Oftentimes truly changing public policy for the better requires not only improving the law but also careful oversight in order to ensure proper implementation of that law. You may remember that late last year we scored a significant legislative victory by getting the strong “state authority” provisions I championed for almost three years included in the long-overdue replacement to the “No Child Left Behind” education law.

I can now confirm that no illegal immigrant minors will be sent to Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery or any other Alabama military facility this year.
