Representative Roby's Weekly Columns

It has been 50 years since "Bloody Sunday," the moment that drew the attention of the nation to continued institutional injustices toward black Americans in Alabama. Seeing those unbelievable images convinced Congress and the president to take action ensuring citizens could not be denied the right to vote, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law. This week, the attention of the nation has turned back to Alabama as we mark 50 years since the Selma-to-Montgomery marches.

It’s no secret that college and career-tech expenses have risen dramatically over the last several years. Millions rely on so-called 529 college savings plans for this purpose. Congress can do more than just protect beneficial 529 plans; we can make them even better. My colleague, Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas has a commonsense plan to do just that.

Over the last few weeks, officials from the White House to the State Department, and even the president himself, have repeatedly stumbled over how they speak about terrorism. The Obama Administration’s recent effort to dismiss radical Islamic terrorism as “violent extremism,” not based in religion, is disappointing and dangerous. It’s time for more straight talk and less “nuanced” talking points from our Commander-in-Chief and his advisers.

One of the main reasons I voted against the “Budget Control Act of 2011” was that it threatened dangerous, disproportionate reductions to military funding through what’s known as sequestration. Since then, I have worked with others in Congress to mitigate the impact of those cuts by passing a law allowing inter-branch spending flexibility and by supporting subsequent budgets that restored some, but not all of the funding. However, those “Band-Aid” fixes are set to expire, and the full impact of sequestration will be felt beginning in Fiscal Year 2016 if Congress doesn't act. That’s why I’m working to build a bi-partisan coalition of lawmakers willing to fix sequestration and stop the devastating cuts that would be so harmful to our nation’s military.

The Super Bowl brings with it the largest underground human sex trafficking operations of the year. Last week, the House of Representatives voted on a series of bi-partisan bills to crack down on these atrocious crimes and to protect victims.

Last week, President Obama spoke to Congress and the nation in his annual State of the Union Address. I had hoped to hear the president put forward an agenda of bi-partisan solutions Congress could work on together to move the country ahead. Unfortunately, for the most part, we heard the opposite: lofty ‘pie in the sky’ promises that sound good, but aren't realistic or serious.

Having been in session only a couple of weeks, the 114th Congress has already set a tone of productivity and responsibility in meeting the needs of people across the nation. Representing Alabama’s Second District means some of my main priorities are protecting our military, creating good-paying and sustainable jobs, and lowering the costs of everyday needs like groceries and energy. Here are a few bills that we have passed in the House to provide solutions to these issues.

The 114th Congress began this week, and House Republicans wasted no time addressing President Obama’s overreaching immigration actions. What the president has done is wrong and dangerous. That’s why on the first day of the session, I introduced legislation to use the “power of the purse” to block the president’s executive amnesty plans by prohibiting funds from being used to implement the orders.

Rep. Roby details some of her priorities for the new Congress, including continuing to reform the VA, addressing President Obama's immigration action and providing proper funding for our military.
