High-level negotiations between President Barrack Obama, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH), and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) continue, but have not yet produced a final package. Negotiations are fluid, and members suggest different proposals each day. To meet the deadline, the House must consider legislation by July 28 to provide the Senate enough time to act. Such a tight deadline makes for an interesting week in Washington.

President Obama now seems to recognize that any increase in the federal debt limit will require significant reductions in future spending. This is good news for taxpayers. But the President’s repeated demand that Congress also approve revenue raisers—Washington’s codeword for new taxes—represents a misunderstanding of our budget problems and a misreading of the American people.

During my travels through the Second Congressional District two weeks ago, I heard from many I represent about how Washington is in the way of job growth. Americans are weary of the ever-growing size and scope of government. Federal regulations imposed by the administration are overwhelming the potential for growth, improvement and jobs in our local areas.

In a crucial vote to change the course of spending in Washington, I recently opposed legislation that would increase the national debt limit from $14.3 trillion to $16.7 trillion. Over the past several years, Democrats have increased discretionary spending 24 percent adding an additional $4.5 trillion in the national debt. All the while, the American public has sat helplessly on the sidelines watching the Democrats in Washington drive our debt to historic levels.

Our country received news late Sunday night that the leader of Al-Qaeda and the mastermind behind the tragic 9-11 terrorist attacks has fallen. Osama bin Laden was killed during a raid planned and carried out by U.S. Special Forces. The news will forever remain a tremendous moment in our history. Nearly a decade has passed since bin Laden breached our country’s security attacking our soil on 9-11.

Last week, House Republicans passed the largest reduction in federal spending in our nation’s history. The Fiscal Year 2011 Continuing Resolution approved by Congress reduces spending by nearly $40 billion. Importantly, it funds our troops at home and abroad, and it keeps the U.S. government open through the remainder of the year.

Many of my constituents have expressed apprehension regarding the United States’ participation in military operations in Libya. I share their concern. It is clear that our military has once again performed with professionalism and precision, and has achieved the initial military objective of establishing a no-fly zone in a manner in which no other fighting force is capable.

The people of the Second District sent me to Washington to make tough choices, and for the past several months, I have been working hard to fight spending and cut burdensome federal regulations. There is much more work to do.
