It is imperative that Alabama students have access to first-rate education opportunities that prepare them for the careers of tomorrow. That’s why I am a proud proponent of Career and Technical Education (CTE), and Alabama is blessed to be home to a strong network of programs.

The House Appropriations Committee has approved the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2016. This is the annual legislation that provides resources for military training, equipment and services, as well as base maintenance and infrastructure. The bill also funds veterans’ benefits and programs, including the Veterans Heath Administration (VA).

Some troubling news: the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) has been home to the highest percentage nationwide for extended delays in veteran appointment completions, according to an in-depth report by the Associated Press.

Last week, I traveled throughout the Middle East as part of a Congressional Delegation led by the Speaker of the House to evaluate the rising influence of ISIS and Iran, and to examine the potential impacts on U.S. interests at home and abroad. Enhancing Career and Technical Education (CTE) has been a primary focus of mine during my service in Congress. Why? Because it empowers young workers to find good-paying jobs, helps prepare youth for a smooth transition from school to career, and lifts up communities throughout Alabama - all at the same time.

It has been 50 years since "Bloody Sunday," the moment that drew the attention of the nation to continued institutional injustices toward black Americans in Alabama. Seeing those unbelievable images convinced Congress and the president to take action ensuring citizens could not be denied the right to vote, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law. This week, the attention of the nation has turned back to Alabama as we mark 50 years since the Selma-to-Montgomery marches.

It’s no secret that college and career-tech expenses have risen dramatically over the last several years. Millions rely on so-called 529 college savings plans for this purpose. Congress can do more than just protect beneficial 529 plans; we can make them even better. My colleague, Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas has a commonsense plan to do just that.
