The Super Bowl brings with it the largest underground human sex trafficking operations of the year. Last week, the House of Representatives voted on a series of bi-partisan bills to crack down on these atrocious crimes and to protect victims.

Last week, President Obama spoke to Congress and the nation in his annual State of the Union Address. I had hoped to hear the president put forward an agenda of bi-partisan solutions Congress could work on together to move the country ahead. Unfortunately, for the most part, we heard the opposite: lofty ‘pie in the sky’ promises that sound good, but aren't realistic or serious.

Having been in session only a couple of weeks, the 114th Congress has already set a tone of productivity and responsibility in meeting the needs of people across the nation. This week, Congress passed a comprehensive Appropriations plan for 11 out of 12 titles, with a continuing resolution for Homeland Security. The plan brings the federal deficit to half what it was in 2010, slashes funding for the IRS by $345 million, prevents federal authorities from regulating farm ponds and irrigation ditches under the Clean Water Act and provides critical military funding, including for the new Lakota Helicopters to enhance the aviation training mission at Fort Rucker and for the Navy's Mobile-built Littoral Combat Ship and Joint- High Speed Vessel.

You’ve probably heard me talk before about the “squeeze” facing middle class families in this economy. A recent front page Wall Street Journal article laid out what is behind that squeeze - the combination of rising costs for basic needs and largely stagnant incomes.

As President Obama was set to address the nation on his immigration plans, I had hoped he would commit to executing the law faithfully, just like he swore an oath to do as president. Instead, we heard the opposite.
