As the Representative for Alabama’s Second Congressional District, I believe my first job is to listen to those I represent and work on their behalf in Congress. That’s why before each vote I take, I first ask, “How are the people I represent affected?” And for me, the district’s and Alabama’s interests will always come first. The 2015 budget deal did not put Alabama’s interests first, in a number of ways, and that’s why I voted no. There were several reasons I could not support this deal that was passed by the House and Senate. To name a few, the top-down process by which the bill was conceived was all wrong, and I believe we could have charted a much stronger fiscal course.

This week marked a significant turning point in Congress as Paul Ryan was elected to be the new Speaker of the House. Of course, outside of his service in Congress, Paul Ryan is best known as Mitt Romney’s running mate in the 2012 presidential election. He has spent this year as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and was previously Chairman of the Budget Committee, both important positions with considerable influence on fiscal policy. He has been a leading voice for supply-side, conservative economics for years, and his “Path to Prosperity” budgets, though never passed by the Senate, were the blueprint of Republicans’ vision for conservative governing.

As you know, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday appeared the Select Committee on Benghazi to answer questions about what happened before, during and after the September 11, 2012 attack on a diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya. It was a long hearing with hours of back-and-forth testimony, and I wanted to share a few quick takeaways from one of my own exchanges with Mrs. Clinton.

This coming Thursday, October 22, my colleagues and I will be questioning former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she appears before the Select Committee on Benghazi. Her testimony is needed to fill in critical holes in the story about the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on a diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya that left four Americans dead, including our U.S. Ambassador.

Good news: the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has halted an attempt by the Environmental Protection Agency to expand its reach into private lands by making small ponds, streams and ditches subject to federal regulations.

Good news: the House of Representatives passed the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act. The NDAA is the annual bill that authorizes spending and policy for the entire military, including programs and efforts at installations in Alabama.

Last week, I had the opportunity to go to Maxwell Air Force Base to visit with the Joint Flag Officer War-fighting Course at Air University. This course prepares one and two-star officers of all service branches for theater-level combat leadership. That means those who will command theaters one day come to Air University to receive broad instruction on strategic and operational leadership from top instructors, many of whom are battle-tested themselves.

Not everyone is pro-life like I am, but those who are should not be forced to have their tax dollars fund an organization that aborts more than 350,000 unborn babies every year.

It is hard to believe 14 years have passed since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country. None of us will ever forget where we were that day 14 years ago and how it affected us. The world changed before our very eyes, and, in many ways, it won’t ever be the same.

Among the most pressing issues facing Congress as we reconvene is a resolution to reject President Obama’s proposed agreement over Iran’s nuclear capabilities. I’ve discussed my thoughts about the deal as I’ve travelled throughout Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District the last few weeks and I’ve listened to the concerns expressed by those I represent.
