This past week the House passed the Fiscal Year 2017 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill. This 81.6 billion legislation provides resources for military training, equipment and services, as well as base maintenance and infrastructure. The bill also funds veterans’ benefits and programs, including the Veterans Administration (VA).

This week the House Appropriations Committee marked up and approved the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill, advancing the annual legislation funding veterans services and military installations for consideration by the full House.

This past week I met with the National Federation of Independent Business’s (NFIB) Alabama Leadership Council in Montgomery. As you probably know, the NFIB is a member organization made up of small and independent businesses, and this particular group represents small business operators from all across Alabama.

Newly-confirmed Secretary of Education John King came to Capitol Hill this week to testify in our Appropriations budget hearing. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, and specifically the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the U.S. Department of Education budget, this hearing provided me a good opportunity to press the secretary to make sure he and his staff adhere to the new education law that forbids federal coercion on state education policy.

Every American should be concerned about the growing national debt and the out-of-control government spending that contributes to it. Frankly, I believe this issue isn’t discussed enough on the national level. While the complexity of government debt and deficits might not make for exciting television news, Washington’s spending problem will have real and profound consequences for all of us if it isn’t addressed.
