Congresswoman Martha Roby

Representing the 2nd District of Alabama

Second Amendment

The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land and our most important governing code. As you know, the Second Amendment clearly recognizes an individual's fundamental right to own a firearm. I own a gun myself, and I strongly value the rights guaranteed in the Second Amendment.

As a supporter of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Gun Owners of America (GOA), I have fought efforts to erode our Second Amendment rights in the past. The overwhelming majority of gun owners are law-abiding citizens who strictly follow all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. That is why I oppose creating new laws that trample on gun owners’ rights.

I will always continue to support the rights of law-abiding American citizens to own firearms.

H.R. 8 is a poorly drafted and ill-considered bill that would punish lawful gun owners without doing anything to prevent gun violence.
February 14, 2019 Press Release
This legislation is poorly drafted and ill-considered. It simply punishes lawful gun owners without addressing the realities behind gun violence. To combat gun violence, we must look at improvements to our mental health system, and we must more effectively enforce the laws currently on the books. We should not be wasting valuable time on an ineffective bill that will only serve to impede upon the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans.
